Research assistant in data-driven materials science (m/f/d)

The Institute for Materials Science and Engineering at Clausthal University of Technology is pleased to announce a research assistant position available for 3 years with the option of pursue a PhD. The position is embedded in a cooperation with the Institute of Software and Systems Engineering and we wish to fill it as soon as possible. The role centres on data-driven modelling of process–structure–property relationships, including 2D/3D microstructure reconstruction. We aim to develop AI-enabled models to analyse and control novel manufacturing processes that utilise secondary raw materials. The successful candidate will join a broader team of Research Assistants advancing data-driven engineering.

The Institute for Materials Science and Engineering at Clausthal University of Technology has a strong application focus in Research and Teaching. The research group Digitalisation in Materials Science and Engineering focusses on researching process-structure property relationships of architectured and classic materials. The prospective candidate should strengthen this area strategically so that we seek a candidate with a background or interest data-driven materials science. 

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducting an externally funded research project on data-driven process-structure process relationships.
  • Publication of research results in international journals.
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences.
  • Support for teaching in an area related to the research topic(s).
  • Support of general processes of the institute such as administrative procedures as well as conceptual and strategic tasks and questions.
  • This position is embedded in a strategic collaboration with partners from the UK and Switzerland. Therefore, the position offers the opportunity for lab-visits abroad if this is of interest.

Your profile: 

  • Successful completion of a Master’s degree in data science, materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, or a similar subject.
  • Experience with methods and approaches of data science ideally strongly skewed towards materials science and engineering or already fully fledged data-driven materials science (evidenced e.g. by respective degree programs, final year theses, or first papers)
  • Independent, structured way of working and quick comprehension. This can be illustrated, for example, by first own publications, generated IP, or similar.
  • Good written and spoken English and, if necessary, willingness to acquire German language skills.

Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L). The salary scale for this position is EG 13 TV-L with an indicative gross monthly salary range is €4,629.74 - €6,580.44 depending on experience). The TV-L provides for a special annual payment at the end of the year. In addition, we offer a separate supplementary pension scheme in the form of a company pension (VBL).
