Educational loans are temporary, low-interest loans and serve to support students in advanced phases of their education. They are available alongside or in addition to BAföG benefits. The educational loan is independent of the income and assets of the student or their parents. The loan amount is limited to a maximum of 7,200 euros per training phase. Borrowers are free to choose up to 24 equal monthly installments of €100, €200 or €300 and can also apply for a one-off payment of up to €3,600 for special educational purposes. The educational loan must be repaid in monthly installments of €120 after a period of 4 years beginning with the first disbursement. However, it can also be repaid in full or in part in advance. Further information on educational loans can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Students have the option of financing their first degree with a student loan, regardless of whether they receive BAföG or not. The monthly funding amounts are between €100 and €650. Repayment begins after 6 months at the earliest, 23 months at the most and must be completed within a maximum of 25 years.
For the education and student loan, you should note the six-month commitment period for fixed interest rates. Advice on issues relating to student financing that go beyond BAföG can also be obtained from the Studierendenwerk OstNiedersachsen.
