Digitalization for a Sustainable Society

With the circular economy as the guiding idea overall, the research area Digitalization for a Sustainable Society examines models, methods, and processes of digital transformation. To break down the challenge that sustainable development represents, research is carried out on four topics within this area:

  • Trustworthy Human-Machine Collaboration looks at safe, people-centered ways for humankind and technology to interact.
  • Methods and Uses of Digital Transformation is concerned with how sustainable digitalization can be made possible in important parts of the circular economy.
  • Engineering Dependable Software Systems looks at various aspects of engineering sustainable products and services, with a focus on processes and development models for secure and high-quality software-based systems.
  • New Methods and Tools in Computational Engineering also examines aspects of engineering sustainable products and services but focuses on new methods and tools for modeling, simulation, and optimization.

These fields at times overlap with elements of the other three research areas at Clausthal, for example, when they touch on the digitalization of recycling processes, digitalization in the future energy system in the form of energy-data management and smart regulation, and the computational engineering of innovative materials and processes.

The research area Digitalization for a Sustainable Society chiefly brings together academics with backgrounds in computer science, information technology, mathematics, applied mechanics, business, and economics as well as two research centers: the Simulation Science Center Clausthal / Göttingen and the Center for Digital Technologies. The research activities range from fundamental research to studies focused on potential technology transfer and are at different stages of maturity. Examples of specific projects include Heterogeneous Human-Machine Teams (HerMes) and Recycling 4.0.
